Tabitha Shaveena’s Gig
Sugin Charles | News | 06 28th, 2010| No Comments »

Packing up the space last Saturday, one would never guess it was 18 year old singer songwriter Tabitha Shaveena’s first showcase in front of an audience. Accompanied by her brother on guitar, sister on the keyboard, and a team of backup musicians who call themselves the Eternal Reformation, the crowd was soulfully entertained with a selection of original compositions by this Ipoh lass.

Sitting amongst the crowd, you really start to feel that her music does more than just connect with you. The soulful singing draws you in emotionally. It gave a good number of the audience Goosebumps. Songs rendered like “World Away”, “Not Easy”, “Love,” “In Time,” “Guy on the Train,” “Friend Indeed” and “Make the choice” are powerful interpretations of the singer-songwriter’s personal experiences.

Other songs sung were covers like “When I Look At You ( Miley Cyrus),  ”Do I Make You Proud (Taylor Hicks)”,  and “Always be my Baby (Mariah Carey).” The notable christian rock influence in her music really brought together an atmosphere of peace and harmony and was a hit with the diverse audience of the gig.

With top notch music, strong vocals and commendable talent, Tabitha Shaveena has great potential and we give you two thumbs up for a show well done!

Djezna’s Stalker, formed in 2005 by schoolmates Wang and William, began jamming sessions in Wang’s living room. The duo have since played several acoustic shows since, but they realised that they yearn for a more electric setting. In came Ahmad, a talented acoustic singer-songwriter. Jermyn and Jugs rounds up the rest of the line-up on guitar and bass respectively.

Their brand of Djezna Rock came from the different musical influences of the members, each bringing a variety ranging from blues and jazz pop to grunge and hard rock to the table. The band is currently in the midst of songwriting and an EP is planned for the second half of 2010.

Sir Attext Gig
Bex | News | 06 22nd, 2010| No Comments »

Coming all the way from Sarawak, Sir Attext rocked Homegrown Space last Saturday. Formed in the late 90’s, this rock band’s charming lineup consists of Nazeeb, (guitar), Khairul (bass), Bet (vocals), and Apap (drums).

The band kicked off the show with the song Atmosphere, which really warmed up the crowd and gathered a good following of viewers. With their loud guitars, heavy drumming and impressive tunes, this band was quite the attraction at the Space that evening.

Other crowd favourites played at the event were Tembak Sana (Rock!), From Skeleton, Martabat, Perdana, Moment of Azzuri, and Dagen Dua Garisan, which is the Melanau version of their song Morning Lisborn.

Strong supporters of the band from near and far joined in to support, with everybody leaving entertained and satisfied.

Overall, it was a good show and we hope to see you at the space again soon! :)

Teacher leave those kids alone, it’s a schools out gig!!!

6th June Sunday 2010,

Yeah, the first week of school holidays have begun, Homegrown Space ushers in this break with our homemade show Schools Out Gig is organised by and features talents under 21years such as Tabitha Shaveena, Automan, Cassandra, Beatboxer Sho, Shruthi, special guest from ICOM Terry, a rock unite highlight band Mystery Call and lyrical stylist Gila Monstarz.

First up was Hadi, a walk in, who was purveying the instruments at Bentley decided kick off the show with his acoustic performance. Next, first timer singing to an audience; MissTabitha Shaveena accompanied by her brother on guitar, eased us with her songs World Away, Love, her deep vocals resonated a trapped powerful sound, this girl has a lot of potential to grow vocally. Nice tunes and well thought ballads. ‘Nothing can satisfy my heart, only you’ stuck in my brain.

The came Automan Band, these 5 guys being best friends in school, decided to take it seriously after the first jamming session, with Adam on guitar, these Indie rockers, rocked all the way with their Indie Brit pop style. Soon after our own host Cassandra performed a vocal medley without instruments. Anxiously awaiting his turn, aspiring Beatboxer Sho, the boy certainly wowed us, he didn’t trip on his tongue once presenting his take on beating the vocal box, likened to human mobile disco box with effects from techno to R&B, a good sport and entertaining the audience with lyrical banter.

From Beat-boxing to the finger styling’s on the guitar with Terry from ICOM, something that awed all of us. You just have to see for yourself. Special thanks to Siva Chandran for arranging this. Rock Unites then presented Mystery Call, taking the stage to show them how rock is cooked. Yat Yee Sam Sei, definitely for classic rock style fans. Our second last act Miss Shruthi a19 year old, who won best Tamil song Album for the AIM, with ‘the secret of nature’ and other favourites.

Finally to close the show none other than Gila Monstarz who are brilliant as usual who never fail to bring up the life at the party with R&B at its best. Can’t wait for the next one coming up in 3 months.

Thanks to all the artistes and their managers and those who came to support all under 21’s.

If you’d like to showcase yourself for our next Schools Out Gig, send us your details, let us know which school you are from, send us a demo, if you are selected, be prepared with a 15 minute showcase (3-4 songs). For more information please contact becky@homegrownspace.com.my.

Minz

Singer/Songwriter, Min’z (pronounced min-zee) is always trying to find a sincere approach to her songwriting experience. Min’z portrays her every thoughts and feelings into the melody and lyrics that she created on her musical canvas. Her emotions can be felt immensely via her music, that can be best described as a combination of folk, pop and soul that has her very own touch to it.

In 2009, she has gotten one of her songs, To See You Go professionally produced by Malaysian producer, Tan Chee Meng. This song has gotten positive feedbacks especially in garageband.com, where it was featured as track of the day. Later, the song was remixed by DJ Patrick Oliver, who’s a house DJ at Euphoria, Ministry Of Sound, and has gotten positive response.

Charcoaled Firefly (2010) is her debut EP, featuring original tracks recorded in Studio.MB, Singapore. Her voice has often been compared to Dido, Sarah Mclachlan, the Corrs and even a female version of James Blunt. Her lyrics are simple but it has the immensity that brings you to various moods and thoughts. This EP features a great blend of music sense, passion and sincerity… the window into Min’z soul.
