Handle With Care

Handle With Care is an independent pop punk band based in Petaling Jaya. The band consists of Faisal Yusof on vocals and bass, Andy Seah and John Paul Pacaldo on guitars, and Abdul Musowir a.k.a. Moose on drums. Faisal, Andy, John and Chee Ben Jin(former drummer) founded the band in late 2008. After forming a strong friendship, they decided to form a band as they share a common interest in music. The band were later joined by David Woong in 2009. In August 2009, Ben left the band to further his studies overseas. He was then replaced by Moose in October 2009. In January 2010, David left the band due to personal reasons. With his departure, HWC is now a four-piece band with Faisal taking over the role as bassist for the band. A far cry from their beginning of playing covers, the band took a step forward by writing their own songs after being together for a few months. HWC have released three singles and played numerous gigs around Malaysia, they are now on a roll to make a name in the music scene.

Comfortably spooned on the homegrown couch last Saturday, we were all treated to the lyrical pumped up, dreamy electronic, popish post rock styling’s of Witherspoon; officially formed in 2006; comprised of soft spoken yet powerful vocalist guitarist Zachreen on lead, musical fingers and harmonised vocalist Azim on the keyboard, Aizat who plays a mean Bass and Zahiri on Drums.
They entertained us with songs from their 1st Album ‘Scapes and Sounds’, such as Hideaway, Missing Pieces, Quote me a sonnet, a medley of Wounded and Alone in Istanbul, melancholic Tingle’s and everything, which made it into the Asian Shoegaze compilation (Japan Indie Label), as well as their new stuff releasing April 2010 like Crossings and a special treat, their contribution to the Belukar Film soundtrack, titled Pandangan Pertama, their first Malay song, which I feel in love with.
The band members have been collaborating with each other since 1997; being past friends, these guys are very tight (precise) as a band and have great rapport with the audience, expect some incite to the bands history & story telling. Compared to their albums, their live sets are best, highly recommended, you’ll be surprised that this international sounding talents are homegrown. We at the space can’t wait for their second release by First Stance records.
As for me, this band is professional and gave their 200%, they sound like a blend of Coldplay Sum41 and Gin Blossoms. Truly a unique alternative sound.

All in all, you had to be here at HOMEGROWN SPACE and if you’ve missed it you can get more information on their gigs by joining homegrown facebook or

Last weekend, we were entertained by Hardcore / Progressive Rock band Revuforte. The 3 man band comprises of Afiq (Lead Vocals /Lead Guitar), Bulya (Bass) & Adrie (Drums). The gig was Rockiiin!!! They gig kicked off with an awesome hardcore intro followed by all original tracks in both english & malay. At one point, fans were treated to a wicked drum solo and to cool things down a notch, Afiq followed through with an acoustic number taking the stage with only a mic and his acoustic guitar.

With mind blowing guitar riffs, rocking bass lines and a tight drummer this band showed just how much they have to offer. They wowed the crowd and their performance left a mark on our mind AND our ears. To follow them log on to: www.myspace.com/revuforte

Last Saturday we were treated to a performance by upcoming band; The Bananas.
Their original tracks were written by lead guitarist Yew Joe; among them, the catchy tune “30 Days” and a moving balled called “Me and You”. This talented bunch showed their skills with great music accompaniment from the the guitarist (Yew Joe ), bassist ( Jye ) and drummer ( Kimie ) along with their vocalist (Gideon) who was a real crowd pleaser. All in all it was an entertaining evening.

witherspoon

Witherspoon was officially formed in April 2006. The band consists of Zachreen Zakariah (Songwriter / guitarist / lead vocalist); Azim Hulaimi (Synthesizer / Piano); Aizat Zawawi (Bass) & Zahiri Zulkifly (Drums) but these best friends from high school have actually been playing music & performing since 1997.

Their first release “Scapes & Sounds”, from their 7 song EP was produced by Bakry (Meet Uncle Hussain, ROB, Koffin Kanser). With Zachreen’s eccentric vision along with the band’s distinctive musical direction, Scapes & Sounds received reviews with flying colours from the likes of magazines such as Junk and ROTTW. ROTTW named them as to be the next big thing due to their distinct quality of their sound, songwriting skills and musical direction which sets Witherspoon apart from any other Malaysian act.

Their first single, “Tingles & Everything” quickly gained attention from labels and listeners overseas including Quince Records (one of Japan’s respected Indie labels). In the Asian Shoegaze Compilation, Witherspoon became the only band from Malaysia to be included in the compilation appearing alongside a host of other bands from Indonesia, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries to name a few. “Tingles & Everything has also been offered airplay over Manchester’s Bing Satellites radio based in Manchester, UK.

Witherspoon is best known for leaving a mind-blowing impression on listeners coupled with their combination of dream pop, post rock, 90’s alternative sound to killer harmonies. On stage, Zachreen’s angelic voice dazzles people who crave something different from today’s bands.

The band is currently in the studio recording their 2nd release and just signed under First Stance Records. This release should be in stores sometime in April 2010.
